The Texas Music Office and Visit McKinney (McKinney Convention & Visitors Bureau) will co-host a Music Friendly Community Workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the Courtroom Theater at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, 111 N. Tennessee St. in downtown McKinney. This informational session will begin at 7 p.m.

The workshop is free and open to anyone interested in learning how they can be part of this new Texas Music Office program that seeks to foster music business economic development in Texas cities and communities. Brendon Anthony, Director of the Texas Music Office within the Office of the Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Division, will be on-hand to explain the Music Friendly Community designation and answer questions. All stakeholders in music in McKinney - musicians, venue owners, educators, students, parents, media, and city officials - are welcome to attend.

McKinney’s workshop next week is the first step in the certification process, and when complete, McKinney will join around a dozen other Texas cities deemed “Music Friendly.” Cities that have already received the official “Music Friendly Communities” designation from the Texas Music Office include Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Denton, Lindale, Stephenville, Conroe, San Angelo, Nacogdoches, and Abilene. Those currently working through the certification process include Bay Area Houston, Corpus Christi, and El Paso.

“McKinney’s music scene, from early instruction to performance, is thriving and growing exponentially. The many dedicated educators, talented musicians, and business owners who provide places where music can be shared have all made that growth possible,” said Dee-dee Guerra, Executive Director of Visit McKinney.  “We’re really looking forward to working in conjunction with the Texas Music Office and our community to earn this designation for our city.”

In 2019, McKinney received designations from the state as both a Historic Downtown Cultural District and a Texas Film-Friendly City.
