(The following text has been corrected to fix links that no longer worked.)
Visit McKinney, the city's destination marketing organization, was honored to bring home four Peoples' Choice Idea Fair marketing and promotion awards from the annual Texas Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus (TACVB) conference held last week in Denton.
There were some really wonderful entries submitted by our peer organizations in other Texas cities, making for
stiffer competition than in past years. W
e were excited to receive an award in four of the five categories we entered within our budget classification. What's even better is that all four awards represent partnerships either in funding or cooperative efforts between Visit McKinney and some of our terrific tourism partnerships with our community.
Second Place Awards
Downtown McKinney was named as a "2018 Great Places in Texas" by the Texas Chapter of the American Planners Association (APA) for its revitalization of the downtown square. By partnering with
the City of McKinney Communications Department,
, and the McKinney Community Development Corporation, w
e were able to bring Chet Garner (PBS's
) to town to have a promotional video made. We loved having
Historic Preservation Officer Guy Giersch speak about downtown's revitalization!

We had more fun working with the McKinney Chamber of Commerce and members of the D2 McKinney planning committee to plan and host a fantastic Fan Fest the night before the NCAA Division II Football Championship. (The game was held at the McKinney ISD Stadium in December 2018.) Fans from both competing colleges, Valdosta State (Georgia) and Ferris State (Michigan), as well as local fans packed TUPPS Brewery, including the Valdosta band and cheerleaders. What a fun night showing our visitors from these two far-away states true Texas hospitality and giving them a good taste of how we Texans celebrate football!

Third Place Awards
We started working with Historic Preservation Officer Guy Giersch to host regular historic walking tours in mid-2018. Tour attendees always report enjoying learning so much about our community's historic district on these tours. In early 2019, Tonya Fallis from the city's GIS (mapping) department got involved and began creating digital versions of the printed tour Guy had created years ago. This allows people to access tour information on their phones or tablets. What made this tour project even more fun was when we connected Tonya with our tourism partners in town - Chestnut Square, the Heard-Craig House, Collin County History Museum, and McKinney Art Studio Tour. Tonya and these groups then created digital maps for events and projects these organizations were creating.

TV Producer Scott Browning came to McKinney to inquire about filming a TV pilot here. The filming would take place over four nights of dinners pairing three local chefs with eight local artists. Scott also spent a considerable amount of time in our community to video other aspects of our city. Visit McKinney worked with him to locate the venue that fit his needs, and introduced him to the chefs and an artist who could coordinate with the right artists for the project. We then worked with Scott to promote the ticket sales for the dinners. The McKinney-focused TV pilot episode for this new TV series is now complete and we awaiting word about when the show with air.
Many thanks to all of our partners who worked with us on these projects, and to our TACVB peers for bestowing these awards on us.
