Breakfasting, McKinney Style!
Posted on January 9, 2018 at 4:42 PM by Beth Shumate
We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so we've always been told! Breakfast spots can be found across McKinney, offering everything from classic biscuits and gravy to fancy donuts and waffles.
The newest breakfast/lunch spot in McKinney, which opened just after Christmas 2017, is located in the
Target/Lowe's Shopping center on the northwest corner of University and Central Expressway. Offerings include all the favorite foods that help make breakfast the most important meal of the day! Whether your tastes lean more toward sweet or savory, you'll find it here, be it an omelet, French toast, waffle, crepe, and, of course, the Southern breakfast staple, biscuits and gravy. But you'll also find entrees with the cafe's special spin - Smoked Salmon Benedict, S'Mores Pancakes, and one of their specialties, the Biscuit and Gravy Omelet!
Over on the lunch menu, you'll find a wide assortment of sandwiches including paninis, wraps, and burgers along with several gourmet salads. Their breakfast menu includes a couple gluten free choices, and there is a kids' menu complete with Mickey Mouse pancakes. Open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. seven days a week.
Bill Smith's Cafe
Bill Smith's Cafe is definitely the grandfather of the breakfast and lunch hangouts in town, full of fun nostalgic decor. Bill Smith Sr. opened the diner in 1956 and son Bill Jr. (now 78) took over the head chef's apron and spatula when his dad passed away a number of years ago. Bill can usually be found manning the kitchen while daughter Debbie Smith is most often behind the counter welcoming guests and manning the cash register, or delivering food to hungry diners.
The breakfast menu includes your usual morning fare with a wide range of egg choices, breakfast meats, biscuits and gravy, and for the sweet tooth, pancakes and waffles. For the really hungry, check out either Mama or Papa Smith's Specials which include a mix of choices. If you don't see a specific choice on the menu, ask! The Hash Brown Supreme is a menu specialty, a favorite of many of the regulars ... and there are plenty of regulars here, folks who've been coming for many years! Many of the waitresses have been with the cafe for a while too, calling regular customers by name or giving them hugs when not hustling plates back and forth. The lunch menu is full of burgers and special comfort food plates. Check out the very reasonably-priced lunch specials, a different one every day. The pies are also a specialty and are available for special orders for the holidays. 1500 W. University. Open 5 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 5 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
Not Just for Your Sweet Tooth:
The Donut Kitchen
While this West McKinney spot might sound like it's got nothing but sweet offerings, The Donut Kitchen offers a nice selection of breakfast options as well as sandwiches for lunch. Their donut menu is extensive, offering their pastries with all sorts of ingredients and/or toppings - cereal, M&Ms, cookie pieces, fruit and even bacon crumbles - offered on vanilla, chocolate, blueberry, strawberry, red velvet and even seasonal flavors of donuts. Breakfast choices include their specialty open-faced choices - the Open-Face Apple & Gouda sandwich and the Open-Face Caprese sandwich, both served on sourdough - and favorites featuring fancy chicken salad, pulled pork, from-scratch pimento, ham, turkey and various cheeses.
The Donut Kitchen also offers salad, soups, wraps, and even beer and wine. 7250 Virginia Parkway, Suite 140, at Stonebridge Drive. (Word is they'll be opening a second location in downtown McKinney in 2018!) Breakfast served 6:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. seven days a week.
Exclusive to North Texas:
With five locations open in North Texas since 2012, McKinney's two locations of Starwood Cafe are quickly becoming favorite dining spots among many McKinney breakfast aficionados. The Rushiti brothers who founded the chain own and operate the Adriatica location while selling the other four spots, including McKinney's other location at Eldorado and Central Expressway.
Each location offers an online menu which may vary slightly depending on favorites to each community. Breakfast entrees include a variety of dishes pairing eggs with choices including steak, chicken fried chicken, beef hash, and even grilled asparagus. An assortment of omelet, pancake, crepe, French choices, skillets and other combination favorites fill their breakfast menu, while lunch includes the breakfast skillets, sandwiches (burgers and paninis), salads, and traditional plates including fried chicken and steak. Starwood also offers an extensive breakfast sides menu, kids menu and variety of espressos. McKinney locations are at 2821 Craig Drive (northwest corner of Eldorado and 75) and 470 Adriatic Parkway. Open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. daily.
Widely-Known Breakfast Spots
McKinney is also home to three of the main diner chain restaurants known for their breakfasts - International House of Pancakes, Denny's and Waffle House - all found along Central Expressway between White Street and Bloomdale. All three are open 24 hours, making them perfect for those late night or early morning travelers, or for those wanting to grab something to eat after a late-running game or concert. Their breakfast menus are served all day as are lunch and dinner.
Other Places to Grab a Quick Bite
We'd be remiss if we didn't at least mention all the fast food places that offer breakfast, usually only until 10:30 a.m. With three Chick-fil-a locations, multiple McDonald's, Jack in the Box, three Whataburgers, Taco Cabana, and multiple Taco Bells and Taco Buenos all offering a variety of quick breakfast, not to mention the donut shops scattered throughout the community, travelers and locals alike can grab an inexpensive meal on the go no matter where they are in town.
